Data Science Intern - Computer Vision

Euroconsumers has been dedicated to promoting consumers’ rights for over 60 years. They provide various services to their members, including researching, testing, and evaluating products and services to help consumers make informed decisions. Their goal is to empower consumers to protect themselves from unfair practices and promote transparency in the marketplace.

Description of the Internship

Euroconsumers collects and analyses data about food products to inform consumers about the quality of these products. Next to testing these food products in laboratories Euroconsumers also collects information from the labels on these food products by taking pictures of the packaging. These pictures are subsequently read by OCR tools and extracted to internal databases. This process currently contains inefficiencies (such as requiring manual interventions to verify and correct the scanned data).

Your mission as an intern is to assess alternative approaches to extract information from the pictures using machine learning techniques and assess the impact of these techniques on the performance of the collection process (i.e. quality of the extraction and amount of post processing required).

Pre-requisites

  • Positive attitude with an excellent work ethic and strong attention to detail.
  • Good command of English, both written and spoken.
  • Strong programming background in Python.
  • Experience with the Data Science ecosystem of libraries in Python (Pandas, Scikit-learn, PyTorch, Keras)
  • Experience in computer vision, specifically in Optical Character Recognition (OCR), using either traditional or Deep Learning based approaches

What the student will learn

The student will learn to approach an internal R&D project by assess alternative approaches to extract information from pictures using both machine learning techniques and traditional computer vision approaches.

The student will learn to assess the impact of these techniques on the performance of the collection process (i.e. quality of the extraction and amount of post processing required, cost of running the model, energy efficiency).

Team

The student will work in the Business Analytics team (composed of Data Scientists, Data Engineer, Analytics Expert and a Manager) supporting the business unit in charge of developing new products for the Health Line.

Application procedure

To apply for the internship, the student should send a CV via e-mail to jacopo.destefani@test-achats.be including the most relevant project she/he developed in the domain of Computer Vision.

After sending the CV, the students will be recontacted to discuss the eventual follow-up steps.
